Who We Are

The regional food system is changing fast and there are many innovative local food businesses springing up across the region. Despite these innovations, it’s often very difficult for new businesses to become established and survive outside the mainstream food system.

The idea for the South Pennines Food Circle emerged from conversations between academic researchers, local growers and food producers who were looking to find solutions to this problem in order to enhance the resilience of the regional food economy.

Although they often have different aims and objectives, many of these new businesses are inspired by nature and concerned about environmental sustainability. This brings social and economic as well as environmental challenges, which we are working to address by developing new food/ producer oriented markets and infrastructure initiatives across the South Pennines region.

Other concerns revolve around establishing regional circular food systems/ economies. We have had many discussions with farmers, growers and small food producers about developing new food waste streams and finding solutions that align more closely with the food waste hierarchy. Many local food enterprises face challenges in this area but lack the time and resources to find appropriate solutions.

The South Pennines Food Circle was set up to work with all regional stakeholders to find solutions to these and other issues. Please the in touch if you think we can help.
